Kahramaa finishes Barwa project in record time
Friday, Mar 12, 2010
Kahramaa (Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation) yesterday said it has completed one of its fastest projects ever at the Barwa Village.
“The electricity connection works for Barwa Village was completed in record time with the project being awarded in June 2009 and completion on March 6,” Kahramaa technical affairs director Eng Saad al-Mohannadi said during a tour of the sub-station site.
“Usually projects of this magnitude take two years where four-six months go for tendering and awarding. We completed this challenging project in nine months,” al-Mohannadi added.
For Barwa Village, a multi-use complex on 400,000sqm, Kahramaa has set up a GIS substation (gas insulated substations) and a 66/11kV transformer.
“It is fed by Ras Abu Funtas through 66KV double circuit cables at 80MVA with a length of 7km,” officials said.
The project was awarded to Siemens, Saudi Cables and IBB, officials said.
“Work was executed as per the highest quality standards and the international specifications. The challenging project did not affect the schedules of other ongoing works,” Kahramaa Electricity projects head Eng Mohamed Mansour al-Dosari said. Kahramaa has installed and commissioned over 80 substations in the last two years, officials told Gulf Times.
The utility company has also completed the sub-station feeds of Lusail Phase 1 (September 2009), while the Barwa Al Baraha was completed last month.
“A sub-station at Barwa Al Sadd is expected to be commissioned within two weeks while work is in progress for power connection to Lusail Phase 2, and Barwa Financial City,” al-Mohannadi pointed out.
The project cost, according to officials, was QR120mn.
Siemens power transmission division’s projects director Ashok Dudhani later explained a sub-station of this capacity is usually bigger in size but thanks to innovation, the design was compacted.
“Also, the type of equipment used by us for this sub-station means no actual manning of the site is necessary since it can be monitored from remote location,” Dudhani said.
