ABB transformers play their part at soccer World Cup in South Africa

Tuesday, Jun 22, 2010

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has delivered and installed 26 vacuum cast coil dry type transformers that will ensure a reliable and efficient supply of power to the two main stadiums that are being used for the 2010 World Cup soccer tournament in South Africa.

Twelve 1200 kVA dry type transformers will serve the Green Point stadium in Capetown, which has a retractable roof and a seating capacity of 68,000. Fourteen similar transformers in the 500 to 1000 kVA range have been installed in the Soccer City stadium, located in Soweto, Johannesburg. This stadium, with a seating capacity of around 100,000, will be the focal point of the tournament and has been chosen as the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies and key matches of the tournament.

"Our dry-type transformers are designed to minimize environmental and fire hazards and are ideal for crowded areas and public spaces like sports stadiums,” said Tarak Mehta, head of ABB’s global Transformers business. “Reliability and safety are the hallmarks of these transformers and we are delighted to play our part in the 2010 World Cup tournament.”

Transformers are integral components of any electrical grid and are a critical element in the efficient and safe conversion of energy across diverse voltage systems. ABB’s transformer portfolio includes power transformers rated up to 1000 kV, dry- and liquid-distribution transformers, as well as related services and components.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 117,000 people.
